Created: Oct 23, 2006

Lou Maschio, a former OHL and NHL referee who also officiated at the 1964 Olympics, died Friday. He was 80.

In 1950 Mr. Maschio and six other local referees formed the Guelph Hockey Referees Association.

Over the years the group helped mentor numerous officials that went on to officiate in the National Hockey League.

Mr. Maschio himself made it to the NHL as a ref in 1955 and later spent 20 years officiating junior hockey in the province.

After his refereeing career he went back to the NHL as a supervisor and helped scout up and coming officials.

Mr. Maschio was elected to the Guelph Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

He is survived by wife Irene, daughters Kathy-Lou and Kelly and three grandchildren.

Visitation is today at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral service is scheduled for Church of Our Lady tomorrow at 11 a.m.
