2007 Memorial Cup is captured by the Vancouver Giants

The Vancouver Giants and the Medicine Hat Tigers faced off to battle for the honour of hoisting the Memorial Cup above their shoulders. For the first time since 1989 the championship was contested by two WHL teams. The Vancouver Giants who wanted to win the Memorial Cup by “getting in the front door”, unfortunately had to take the back door. The Vancouver Giants who played host to this year’s Memorial Cup were not able to win the WHL Championships, they lost in a heart breaking seven game serise in double overtime. The Medicine Hat Tigers were able to beat the Giant 3-2. Since the Giants were hosting the tournament they automatically qualified for the CHL Memorial Cup.

The game was a back-and-forth, hard hitting game. There was certainly not going to be a cake walk for either team. The Vancouver Giants opened up the scoring 6:07 into the second period. The goal was scored by (#20) Mario Bliznak, assisted by (#23) A.J. Thelen, and (#22)Kenndal McArdle. The Medicine Hat tigers respond back with a goal from (#14) Darren Helm, assisted by (#15) Derek Dorsett.

Late in the third period, with less than five minutes the Vancouver Giants score to take the lead. The goal was scored by (#26) Michal Repik assisted by (#27) Milan Lucic, who opened the game up with a fight against (#29) Jordan Bendfeld five minutes into the game. The Medicine Hat Tigers ran into penalty trouble taking two penalties late in the game, taking a Tripping and Cross Checking Penalty late in the game. The Giants went on to score a late open net goal, they held on to win.

This year’s Memorial Cup set records for attendance, and many say this is the best one ever. The Vancouver Giants are a relatively new team in the Canadian Hockey League, only starting in 2001/2002. Over those few years, they have been able to capture a Memorial Cup (2007), win the Western Hockey League (2006), lose in the WHL Western Conference Semi Finals twice (2003 and 2005). Certainly promising results for a relatively new team. The Vancouver Giants are owned by famous NHL’ers Gordie Howe and Pat Quinn, as well as Ron Toigo previous owner of the Tri-City Americans, and Sultan Thiara.

This is Head Coach, Don Hay’s third Memorial Cup as a Head Coach. He won two with Kamloops Blazers in 1994 and 1995, and this year’s 2007 Memorial Cup.
